Asthma Program Coordinator

The Asthma Coordinator is responsible for assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating
asthma educational programs for patients, families, clinical staff, students, community
professionals, and the public at large. A major focus of this position involves facilitation of
numerous quality improvement (QI) teams in collaboration with physician and clinical leaders
from the Pulmonary Medicine, Hospital Pediatrics, Primary Care, and other affiliated hospital
departments. The Asthma Coordinator is expected to provide high quality educational
opportunities in keeping with evidenced-based treatment and practice and in support of the
strategic goals of the service line.

Responsibilities
- Works with patients, families, health care professionals to develop, implement, monitor
and revise customized asthma education programs, including asthma action plans, for
self-management. - Monitors asthma education program outcomes and recommends modifications to
improve quality and effectiveness. - Serves as a community resource by providing asthma information as well as
healthcare resources. - Participates in and/or serves as a chairperson for asthma education/QI committees
hospital-wide and in the community (includes general meeting management tasks). - Collaborates with physician and clinical leaders from the Pulmonary Medicine,
Hospital Pediatrics, Primary Care, and other affiliated hospital departments to develop,
implement, and evaluate program goals and measure outcomes.
Qualifications
Education Requirement:
Bachelor’s degree in related field
Licensure Requirement:
- Current Ohio license to practice respiratory care
- Valid Ohio driver’s license and proof of auto insurance as required by hospital policy. Must
pass motor vehicle background inspection, insurance eligibility, driving qualifications, and
training set forth by Nationwide Children’s Hospital and maintain qualification of insurance
guidelines.
Certifications:
- Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care (required)
- Obtaining Asthma Educator Certified (AE-C) by the National Asthma Educator Certification
Board is strongly encouraged.
Skills:
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS)-American Heart Association® (required)
- Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)-American Heart Association® (required or
obtain within 6 months of hire) - Active, ongoing membership in the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) is
strongly encouraged. - Active, ongoing membership in the Association of Asthma Educators (AAE) is strongly
encouraged.
Experience:
- Has comprehensive, current knowledge of asthma pathophysiology and management including
developmental theories, impact of chronic illness, cultural dimensions, and principles of
teaching-learning. - Experience in program development and management, QI projects, and research.
- Experience working with budgets and data management.
- Strong interpersonal skills, adept at collaboration, and ability to relate effectively with
physicians, clinical leaders, and a variety of hospital department personnel. - Leadership ability as demonstrated through high level initiative, clinical decision-making and
organizational skills. - Ability to effectively organize and facilitate meetings to produce high quality educational
offerings and QI projects. - Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) and informatics related technology.
- Experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, Skype for Business, PowerPoint,
and Excel).
